Survival of liver recipients

What about the survival time of liver recipients?
The most concerned question for most end-stage liver disease patients ready to undergo liver transplantation is the real survival time of the recipients. The question can not be answered generally. In developed west countries, the general 1-year survival rate of liver transplant is about 85%~90%, the 5-year survival rate is about 80%. The longest survival time for liver recipients is over 30 years. Lots of liver recipients survived over 10 years or 20 years, with satisfied living quality, in other words with normal social and familial lives, some of them came back to job, and made good living. Liver transplantation was widely performed in our country in 1995. Although we only had few years of transplant experience, with the improvement of operation technique and the wide use of new immunosuppressants, the survival rate of liver transplantation in our country is approaching that of European countries and U.S.A. Liver transplantation was carried out in Beijing Medical University Third Hospital in July 2000. Now, we completed about 200 cases. The 1-year survival rate is about 86%, 2-year survival rate is about 70%, similar to the result of liver transplantation performed in the biggest centers in the world and the top in China.
